The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has issued a statement condemning recent criticisms and protests targeting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a press release, the council denounced what it described as attempts by self-serving politicians to destabilize Nigeria’s democratic institutions. These individuals, who failed to achieve electoral success, have resorted to unwarranted agitations aimed at undermining the credibility of INEC, the council noted.
The council expressed its support for INEC under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, citing the impartiality demonstrated during the last elections. They highlighted instances such as sitting governors and National Assembly members losing their positions and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu failing to secure victory in Lagos State, his stronghold, as evidence of a fair electoral process.
Drawing parallels with electoral controversies in advanced democracies, the council emphasized that no electoral system is without flaws. It urged critics to accept defeat rather than orchestrate protests under banners such as #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement, which it described as politically motivated efforts to sow discord.
Furthermore, the council called on security agencies to act against any attempts to create unrest or escalate political tensions. It also urged the President and the National Assembly to disregard these protests, asserting that INEC and its leadership deserve commendation rather than condemnation.
